“Reading is knowledge and knowledge is power!” exclaims Nurul Abdullah, Head Librarian at Nilai International School. She was referring to the Accelerated Reader programme which is followed at NIS and has three key functions: 1) Assessment of a student’s reading level 2) Suggesting of books at that level 3) Assessing comprehension and vocabulary test for every book read Part 1 of the programme was recently completed with a series of STAR tests, which is a computer adaptive test designed to identify a student’s grade-equivalent reading level and instructional reading level. The tests were conducted in NIS’s dedicated primary and secondary libraries. While the programme is designed to monitor and grade students’ reading abilities, it also encourages students to develop a reading habit. Nurul is keen to add that many NIS students have really taken to the programme and many have become enthusiastic and voracious readers.
