Tan Sri Gan Kong Seng (Chairman of NIS Board of Governors) kicked off Chinese New Year celebrations by handing out tangerines and ang pows to students and staff. He also presented prizes for the recent calligraphy contest.. Students from various age groups put on performances to usher in the Year of the Goat. In a short speech, Tan Sri Gan outlined some of the customary beliefs practiced in conjunction with Chinese new Year, explaining things such as to why the Hokkiens’ big celebration is on the ninth day as well as the significance of the Kitchen Gods in traditional folklore. He said that having such celebrations on campus will help international students (and staff) better understand the melting pot cultures of Malaysia. Yee Sang was also tossed with the teachers to usher in a year of prosperity and good luck for NIS.
